Thank you for joining me again this evening for our nightly podcasts. I perform these podcasts in the hopes that you will be able to education yourself on the topics discussed so you can make better informed medical decisions regarding your health in the future. I am doctor Harrison Campbell of Restoration Health a premier sugar land chiropractors office. Previously we discussed consent to treat but focused more on the aspect of patient decisions driving treatment plans and doctor functioning as educators for health care. Tonight we will be discussing a hot topic of health care coverage, which is a pollical hot bed currently.

At this time health insurance is a he political topic in the United States. We will not be going into the pollical aspect of this issue however. We will be focusing on what the impact this is having on your health care coverage which is what should drive the argument not feeling. To start we will be breaking down the current system.

As sugar land chiropractors know the current system for health insurance has both private health insurance, government aided health insurance, and no health insurance. Let us start with the private health insurance. Politically this is the insurance which some politicians want to remove. There are some people who agree with this sentiment.

The removal of private insurance limits the patient’s choice. We discussed this briefly last night and will discuss it again tonight. I am a big proponent of patient’s choice driving health care. When a patients choice is taken from them they lose their independence and their power over their own health care. At the end of the day each of us only has one body. We have to take care of our bodies and as they are our bodies we should have the right to choose what treatments we want done and more importantly who will be administering those treatments.

The minutes private insurance is taken away we lose the choice of picking our insurance. We then are at the mercy of the entity we have as an insurance provider. They can choose which sugar land chiropractors you have access too or even if you can see sugar land chiropractors at all. Now some of you are saying but if I have private insurance they can do that already. The difference there is you have the choice of which insurance company you use. This power of choice you have keeps the insurance companies honest.

Now a government run insurance will have a similar problem of choice. Governments run of the majority. They are giant machines which have systems in place to take care of the day to day functions. What happens with this is you lose the individual. When you lose the individual in health care you lose the specialized care tailored for the individual patient. This means that a majority of people will still recover from the standardized treatment plan, but there are a good portion who will not respond to the quote unquote standard treatment. What this means for sugar land chiropractors is if we have three patients in our office with a cervical spine issue standard protocol will e the same for all patients. Will all three patients respond to the same treatment? Probably, but what happens if the standard treatment is not what patient number two requires? If it is a government health care with systemization, then tough luck. You have to do step A before you can move on to step B.

Now the the plus side of the government health care is a good majority of people would have the health care. People being able to receive the care they need is a good thing. There is a very slippery slope however. Getting a majority of people to have health care at the expense of patients being able to choose the care they receive is not something I would agree with. We have to remember that something which looks good from a certain view point often has some negative consequences from a different view point. It is up to each individual to choose if the benefits from something like this would outweigh the negative consequences of it.

No the third option which is currently happening is people who have no insurance. I do know there are several sugar land chiropractors myself included who will help treat these people by having cash payments available. There are a variety of different reasons for people to have no insurance. A common one is a person changes jobs or careers, or a birthday having them loose the insurance they currently had and there is a gap in their insurance coverage. Then there are some like my sister who were not eligible for the government health insurance and could not afford insurance on her own.

These are the people who would need to pay out of pocket for their health care. These are typically the people which politicians target for their quote unquote free health care. The question you have to decide is giving up your choice of health care worth having the possibly of someone you do not wanting deciding on your health care if its quote unquote free?
To close we will return to a lighter topic. As sugar land chiropractors know patient choice is the biggest factor for health care. Let us not make decisions based on feeling. Let us learn the facts and apply that knowledge so patients not insurance companies, not a government, not a doctor can make an informed decision on our health care.
