Thank you for joining me again this evening for our nightly podcasts. I perform these podcasts in the hopes that you will be able to education yourself on the topics discussed so you can make better informed medical decisions regarding your health in the future. I am doctor Harrison Campbell of Restoration Health a premier sugar land chiropractors office. Previously we discussed the symptoms associated with a disc herniation. Tonight, we will be discussing joint dysfunction.
Most people when asked whether they have suffered from stiffness or aches and pains will answer yes. It seems that aches and pains are an unwanted but very much present part of being human. We when sugar land chiropractors use the term joint dysfunction, they are discussing the very aches, pains, and stiffness which you are suffering from. Joint dysfunction at its heart is simply improper movement in a motion segment.
Now the easiest way to understand this topic is to focus on the motion of a spinal segment but know that these principles can be applies to other joints outside of the spine. Previously I mention the term motion segment. What is meant when this term is used, is two vertebrae and the facet joints which connect them. Remember that a joint is formed when two bones come together, and in this case the two bones forming this joint where motion occurs are two vertebrae.
Now these facet joints have what sugar land chiropractors call a normal free range of motion. Now this normal free range of motion is not the motion you experience when moving your neck. What we mean is each joint has a free floating motion which the joint can move about it. Should a joint be experiencing dysfunction, we lose this free range of motion and the joint move improperly.
This lack of free range of motion is where the stiff feeling most people associate with the need to quote unquote pop their neck or the back. That rush of relief when the pop happens most people associate with restoring the motion or reducing the stiffness they had. Now let us clear up some misconceptions with those beliefs. First and foremost, when people self adjust they are not targeting the areas which need to be manipulated by a chiropractor. When a joint is undergoing dysfunction the joint itself is quote unquote stuck. Therefore, when you self adjust the stuck joint is not he one moving, the joint moving is a joint which is already mobile adjusting. This can create hypermobile segment or joint which have more motion than they should.
Simply put, self adjusting your joints adjusts pretty much everything but the area which actually needs to be adjusted. Second, when sugar land chiropractors adjust we are not trying to create the quote unquote pop people associate with the adjustment. This pop is a side effect of the adjusting process where gas in the joint escapes the joint capsule. The actual goal of the adjustment is not concerned with the gas escaping the joint to create the pop. What we are concerned with is restoring the free range of motion to a joint which is undergoing joint dysfunction. What this means is as long as an adjustment is performed, and the free range of motion is restored the adjustment was successful, whether there was an audible quote unquote pop while the adjustment occurred is not important.
Now as for the adjusting part to restore free range of motion sugar land chiropractors are varied on which technique is best and which technique will provide the most benefit. We will not dive deep into the different techniques available tonight, but know that there are a wide variety ranging from using the hands to adjust, using equipment to adjust, to using specialized tables to adjust.
Should you not make an appointment with sugar land chiropractors to help restore normal free range of motion, problems will develop. We already discussed the basic symptoms associated with this condition. These being the stiffness and minor aches and pains. Should the joint dysfunction continue, we can start to develop more substantial pain which will go from a minor annoyance to a deterrent for daily activities. Additionally, we can suffer a condition known as facet syndrome. This is where we have inflammation in the facet joints of the motion segment where we have diffuse pain over an area with focal sharper pains over the specific facet joint which is the source of the problem.
Now these next symptoms are a long term problem should the joint dysfunction persist. Remember joint dysfunction is improper motion in the joint. This improper motion creates abnormal wear in the joint. While this does not sound bad sugar land chiropractors can tell you that abnormal wear in the joint creates increased wear on the cartilage in the joint. Increase wear on the cartilage wear leads to arthritic conditions being developed, or as some people call it degermation. The abnormal wearing will lead to your joints degenerating and deteriorated at a quicker than normal rate.
The saying you are only as old as you feel is extremely relevant here. Should your joint wear out quicker you most definitely will feel like you are in the body of an older person. Therefore, do the right thing for your health. See sugar land chiropractors so we can correct the joint dysfunction and prevent the degermation as best we can and help with the short term stiffness, aches and pains.
