I perform these podcasts in the hopes that you will be able to education yourself on the topics discussed so you can make better informed medical decisions regarding your health in the future. I am doctor Harrison Campbell of Restoration Health a premier sugar land chiropractors office. Previously we discussed an over view of the shoulder, reviewing everything we had discussed over the last few nights. Tonight, we are getting away from the shoulder and moving into a discussion of diets.

Dieting is a huge business and a huge interest in people these days. Achieving a desirable weight is something many struggle with on a daily basis. Therefore, we will be discussing what makes a diet work and hopefully help you avoid ones which will not benefit you. As sugar land chiropractors can tell you the biggest key to losing weight is not which diet you are on, but the lifestyle change which is made.

Theoretically any diet can help you lose weight, but unless a change in lifestyle occurs there will be no maintaining the weight loss. To this effect the biggest factor to look at when attempting a diet is the sustainability of the diet. And when I say sustainability I mean how long will you be able to maintain the diet. Dieting is not something which is done for a few months then stopped with the expectation of the results staying. You must maintain the change in eating in order for the results to continue.

This is where the sustainability comes into play. The food selection for a diet needs to be something which is not going to limit you. The worst possible diet is something you view as stopping later, because once you stop the results will disappear. Without changing your lifestyle to eating healthy you can not expect to maintain the results you want to achieve.
For sugar land chiropractors eating healthy combined with a good exercise regimen will be the best. This eating healthy is not viewed as a diet but a lifestyle change you make. This can be something as simple as only having fruit for dessert instead of something with more processed sugar or something drastic like choosing to become vegetarian. The important thing is making sure you can maintain this food selection you have chosen.

The exercise portion is something most people forget about when they discuss dieting. Increasing you activity level will help you not only burn calories and lose weight it will help you develop muscle. The reason muscle development is important as sugar land chiropractors will tell you is because muscle burns calories. The more muscle you have the more calories you burn while being stationary. This is effectively termed increasing your metabolic rate. The higher the metabolic rate the more energy you are burning at all times.

This metabolic rate is an important factor for weight loss as well due to the bodies storage of fat when calories are scarce. If you have excess weight and you start a diet you shock the body. As far as the body knows the food sources which were available are now gone so the metabolism declines to burn as little as possible and save energy. To store energy the body uses fat, and when saving energy the body tried to burn as little fat as possible. This is where the plateau effect when dieting comes into play.

This plateau phase is usually when most people become discouraged and quit their diet. As sugar land chiropractors can tell you however, this is the phase when you should increase your exercise regimen and alter your food selection slightly. By providing the body with a little fat, and when we say fat we mean good fats, not saturated or trans fats, it will help the body overcome this plateau. Once the body digests that fat, it will start to burn more of your stored fat. The reason for this is due to the body believing that It can quickly replenish its fat stores due to the consumption of the fat. This reinvigorates the metabolism to burn fat.

Now lets change topic a little to some forms of dieting which would not work. Diets which require you to utilize a pre bought food selection will only work as long as you are purchasing their food. The food which the diet sells is developed with certain nutrition targets in mind, and it will be difficult to replicate them. This is not to say the diet is ineffective. As long as you are willing to purchase the foods and you adhere to the diet it will work for you. Should you stop, it becomes your responsibility to create nutritionally balanced meals in order to continue achieving the desired results. Another type of diet which will usually fail individuals is a diet which focuses on a single food source. I will use a vegetarian diet as an example, but know that vegetarians diets can be and are successful if performed correctly. Most vegetarians diets are performed incorrectly as people jump on the latest trend or fad and do not understand the nutrition behind it. As sugar land chiropractors know a vegetarian diet if it is a true vegan diet with no animal products will require supplements in order to be nutritionally balanced. This is due to the fact that there are some nutrients which only come naturally form animal produces. If you are on a vegetarian diet but consume fish, eggs, or milk it will balance nutritionally.
