Thank you for joining me again this evening for our nightly podcasts. I perform these podcasts in the hopes that you will be able to education yourself on the topics discussed so you can make better informed medical decisions regarding your health in the future. I am doctor Harrison Campbell of Restoration Health a premier sugar land chiropractors office. Previously we discussed vaccinations and the benefits they have provided to the human race since their inception. Tonight we will be discussing the benefits of antibiotics and helping combat disease.

Antibiotics were discovered purely by accident when I scientist noted that spores on his plate we was using to study bacteria prevented the bacteria from growing around them. This halo effect produced was due to the chemical nature of the spore killing the bacteria and preventing its spread. As sugar land chiropractors know this is when the world first received penicillin. This drug would go on to forever change the way mankind fought disease and was a huge step towards extending our life span.

Penicillin became the go to drug for treating infections and disease during this time and while effective the true nature of how this antibiotic worked and how future antibiotics worked was unknown. Now days you here talk of antibiotics being over prescribed. You here of disease and bacteria being labeled super bugs. These super bugs are described as being resistant to antibiotics and requiring incredibly strong antibiotics or a mixer of antibiotics to combat it. The reason for this is as sugar land chiropractors know the inherent nature of bacteria-fighting to survive.

Bacteria adapt to survive. They ingest strands of genetic material from other bacteria to gain advantageous properties from them. What this means is that a bacteria can be weak to lets just use penicillin. This bacteria when faced with the antibiotic penicillin will die or lyse as the drug works in desired way. Should this particular bacteria come into contact with genetic material which can produce a substance to negate penicillin, or modify its own structure to reduce the weakness to penicillin you now have a bacteria which can face down penicillin and survive. This bacteria has become immune or as sugar land chiropractors would say resistant to penicillin.

Additionally a colony of bacteria may be exposed to an antibiotic. Let us just continue to use penicillin as an example. Not every bacteria in the colony will ide to the penicillin. Some will survive the onslaught of the antibiotic but now they have been exposed to it. These surviving bacteria will work to become resistant to penicillin in a similar fashion to you becoming more resistant to a disease with your immune system. This is where it becomes important for sugar land chiropractors to educate their patients on antibiotics and it becomes the responsibility of doctors prescribing antibiotics to educate their patients.

What I mean by this is taking antibiotics and prescribed and prescribing antibiotics correctly. As sugar land chiropractors do not prescribe medications in Texas our responsibility lies with educating patients on antibiotics. To this effect when you are provided an antibiotic for an infection take the medication as prescribed. This includes taking all of the medication. Typically what happens when being given an antibiotic people will stop taking the medication when they start to feel better. Should you cut your antibiotics short more bacteria will survive the medication. This leads to the situation we discussed earlier. These bacteria will have been exposed to the medication and will begin trying to develop a resistance to it. It is important to understand that symptoms are not the disease process, they are as the name implies only symptoms.

If you have a runny nose from an infection the bacteria have triggered the immune response in the body and your body is fighting it off. This includes trying to clean out the sinuses. As your sinuses clear you are still fighting the infection, your symptoms have just decreased. This is similar to the constant talks of pain we have. Pain is not a disease, it is a symptom. You body does not like being in pain and will try to decrease the pain as quickly as possible. Once the pain goes away you start the healing process.

As for doctors who prescribe medications it is your responsibility to diagnose the correct disease process. Antibiotics do not work on viral infections. Certain antibiotics are not effective against certain types of bacteria. It is your job to find the correct treatment for the problem at hand. Do not just throw an antibiotic at the problem and hope It goes away. Find out if they have a viral infection verses a bacterial infection. What type of bacterial infection do they have? Would an analogue of penicillin be the correct antibiotic for this situation or is a different family of antibiotics with a different mechanism of action required to kill this bacteria. Let us do the right thing and get the patient better.

At Restoration Health a premier sugar land chiropractors office we strive to work with other health care providers to get the best care possible for the patient. This includes working with medical doctors, orthopedic doctors, etcetera to get what care is needed for what ever condition is ailing the patient. By working together we can create the best treatment plan possible for our patients. We can educate the patient so they can help themselves by making better informed decisions about their health.
