When Harvey bent over to empty a trash can, Daniel David Palmer happened to notice that Harvey had a vertebra that was out of position. Daniel David Palmer asked Harvey what had happened to his back. Harvey responded to Daniel David Palmer with how he had moved the wrong way and when he did, he heard a pop in his back. Harvey informed Daniel David Palmer that at that same time he lost part of his hearing. Daniel recognized that spinal misalignments and the pressure had an adverse effect on the nerves as well as the overall function of the body. Many of the practices of chiropractic nature were taught and handed down within the family. Daniel’s son and daughter-in-law both carried the science forward over several decades.

Daniel described his work by stating that he was the first to use short-lever HVLA manipulative techniques while using the spinous process and transverse processes as mechanical levers. Daniel stated that the effects of chiropractic spinal manipulation were mediated mainly by the nervous system.
Daniel started his own school of chiropractic, the Palmer School of Chiropractic. This is where he taught his methods to the first chiropractors. Reverend Samuel Weed devised the word “chiropractic” from Greek roots. Chiropractic is a system medicine based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments of the human body joint.
